DSLR vs. Mirrorless Camera: What’s the Difference?

Both DSLRs and mirrorless cameras are sophisticated cameras with interchangeable lenses, but DSLRs have been around for many years, and mirrorless cameras are relatively new to the photography scene.

While there are some differences to consider a few years ago, these have diminished. Nowadays, despite the use of different technologies for taking pictures (DSLRs refer to mirrored cameras using mirrors as the name implies, do not), the practical differences are very small.

So, if you are buying a high-end camera for the first time, you don’t have to worry about which type is better. You should choose a high quality camera that suits your budget.

One caveat: interchangeable lenses are compatible with either DSLR or mirrorless cameras. This means that once you buy a style camera, you can get more value by buying the same style as the next time.

This is not a big deal for new photographers, but experienced ones will probably be overwhelmed by their lens library.

The main difference

Mirrorless cameras preview electronic viewfinder (EVF) and images on LCD screens. DSLRs give you a direct view of the image in the viewfinder with multiple mirrors on the camera.
A DSLR with an optical viewfinder will enjoy longer battery life than a mirrorless camera with an EVF.
DSLRs generate the classic click sound when they snap their shutters, while the mirrorless camera is almost silent.
More new mirrorless models are being released than DSLRs.
Some of the differences that existed are no longer such a problem. For example, mirrorless cameras were historically small and light, but we’ve seen some heavyweight releases lately. And while some may think that DSLRs have larger sensors, you’ll find similar sensors available on both types of cameras.

Another key factor in the difference is the quality of the autofocus. DSLRs used a system called ‘phase detection’ which was faster and better than tracking used in mirrorless cameras. However, most new cameras now use ‘hybrid’ autofocus systems, which have increased the speed and reliability of autofocus systems of mirrorless cameras.

To look for the best DSLR and mirrorless camera features
Some camera features are more important than others. Here are some of the most important.

  • Sensor size. The larger the sensor, the more light will be absorbed and the better the quality of the photo the camera sensor sizes guide for more information
  • 4K video. This is the best bet for good quality video. 1080p is inferior, though the less common 8K doesn’t offer any noticeable improvement on most displays so it’s not worth spending more.
  • Involved screen. A screen that pops out and flops and twists helps you take selfies, video blogs and pictures from the techniques.
  • Zoom lens. A camera that comes bundled with a great zoom lens can adjust the focal length freely, allowing you to make great distance shots and close-ups – although a part of the point of these cameras is that you can change the lenses if you need to.
  • Autofocus You need a good autofocus system so that your camera can detect objects and clear them while they are still active. Look for ‘Face Detection’ and ‘Focusing’ star ratings in our reviews to measure a camera’s autofocus performance.
  • Large ISO range. If the setting of a scene is dimmed, a higher ISO number can artificially illuminate the image to make it clearer.
  • Shutter speed. If you want to capture objects on the move without the risk of blurry images, you need high shutter speeds. It is 1/1000, 1/4000, 1/8000, the bigger the number, the faster the shutter will close.

Since lenses are only compatible with cameras made in certain brands, you can easily become a captive customer who needs to be with the same brand, or smaller brand, to get value from your lens library. This makes it important to get it right the first time.

Some experienced users will swear by a particular brand, but we test each product with its own merits. Read our camera reviews to find out which models are the best.

Which brand releases mirrorless cameras?

  • Nikon’s mirrorless lineup is represented by its premium Z series full-frame cameras. You can probably come across 1 series, it’s a closed line but the cameras can still be found in the second hand.
  • Canon has unveiled the budget and mid-range mirrorless cameras of the EOS M series, which have APS-C sensors, as well as the full-frame camera of the premium EOS R series.
  • The lineup of Panasonic’s Lumix DC cameras is exclusively mirrorless. They range in price from a few hundred pounds to a few thousand pounds of models.
  • Gold mirrorless cameras are available in their alpha range. APS-C cameras make the ‘A’ series more affordable, while the expensive full-frame sensors sit in the A7 series.
  • The Olympus mirrorless camera comes with a micro four-thirds (sometimes abbreviated ‘MFT’) sensor. Its two ranges are OM-DEM and Pen. These are usually entry-level and mid-range although its most premium camera costs around 3,000Euro.
  • Fujifilm’s X-Series APS-C cameras make up most of its mirrorless lineup. The cameras target budget and mid-range areas, generally changing to premium however seldom breaking the 2,000Euro marks

Which brand releases DSLR cameras?

The DSLR market is shrinking as most of the new releases are mirrorless cameras. Nikon and Canon, the leaders in the DSLR market, both have long legitimacy. Pentax also offers a selection.

Are DSLR and mirrorless cameras reliable?

DSLRs and mirrorless cameras are great pieces of kit made with electronics and optics. However, they have lots of moving parts that can increase the risk of something going wrong with your camera.

That said, when we surveyed more than a thousand camera owners in 2012, we found that the vast majority of cameras remained flawless even after five years of ownership.

The three most common faults were:

Focus problem: This was up to 14% of reported errors. Focusing on the issues won’t break the camera completely, but it does make your shot very difficult to compose correctly.
Flash Break: This is the second published problem. If you have a ‘hotshow’ – a model that has brackets on the body of a camera that can mount accessories – you can replace a flash attachment.
Battery or charger crash: This is the third most common error. Fortunately, these components can be replaced, albeit at no cost.
You should expect to own a digital camera for at least half a decade, so it’s a long-term investment.

What quite photos does one wish to take?

Buying high-end cameras can be an expensive business, especially if you invest in multiple lenses. If you’re still unsure if the rewards are justified in investing, consider whether a less sophisticated camera suits your needs:

  • Smartphone cameras have eaten up the digital camera market for a reason: modern smartphones will take rather good pictures. They don’t offer professional quality or much more manual control but are incomparable for capturing unexpected moments. Check out our smartphone reviews to identify the great cameras
  • Compact cameras are still popular and they can be surprisingly powerful. Some of the sensors are usually found in high-end cameras. Use our compact camera reviews to find small, fixed-lens cameras that can pack a punch.
  • Bridge cameras offer the same functionality as DSLRs and mirrorless cameras, but without interchangeable lenses. These are usually fairly inexpensive and can be a great way to try any DSLR-style camera. Give us reviews of Bridge Camera to find a better model
